An outpatient arrives at the facility at the requested time and registers successfully, but is then aggravated by a long wait prior to being brought back to pre-op. The excessive wait time increases the patient’s anxiety and diminishes patient safety and satisfaction.
Patient Wait Times
The real-time tracking of patients was activated upon check-in. In addition, each patients’ arrival and registration statuses were displayed in real-time on the OR schedule and made transparent to the pre-op nurses. Patients were then transferred from the waiting area immediately upon completion of registration and the first availability of a pre-op nurse.
The solution implemented has resulted in a 35% reduced in patient wait times and decreased case delays. Anesthesiologists acknowledge that pre-surgical anxiety has diminished. The results have directly improved patient satisfaction, patient safety, and operating efficiency.
